1889: The Story Behind the Name | The Imperial Scholar’s Calligraphy and the Origin of Lin Heung

[Intro] In the annals of Cantonese culinary history, few names carry the weight of Lin Heung Lau (蓮香樓). Established in 1889, this institution has stood as the “Original House of Lotus Seed Paste” for over 135 years. But the name “Lin Heung” was not a mere marketing choice; it was a gift from an Imperial Scholar of the Qing Dynasty, marking the intersection of high culture and artisanal craftsmanship.

[The Origin: From Bakery to Tea House] Lin Heung’s journey began in the 15th year of the Guangxu Emperor’s reign (1889) in the historic Xiguan district of Guangzhou. Originally a small cake shop named “Lian Xiang Gao” (Lotus Fragrance Cake Shop), it specialized in a revolutionary filling: pure, silky lotus seed paste.

[The Scholar’s Touch] The transformation of the brand’s identity is tied to Chen Ru-yue (陈如岳), a renowned Hanlin Scholar (the highest academic rank in the Imperial court).

“Legend has it that upon tasting the exquisite lotus seed paste, Chen Ru-yue was so moved by the fragrance that he suggested adding the character ‘Lau’ (Tea House) to signify its status as a place of gathering. He personally took up the brush and wrote the three characters ‘蓮香樓’ (Lin Heung Lau).” — Source: Records of Guangzhou Time-honored Brands (广州老字号志).

[The Craft That Earned the Name] What earned such high praise from an Imperial scholar? It was the Proprietary Craft of White Lotus Seed Paste. To this day, we maintain the strict standards set in 1889:

  • Selection: Using only premium “Xianglian” from Hunan.
  • The Technique: Slow-stirring in solid copper woks to prevent caramelization and preserve the delicate “Lotus Fragrance.”

[A Living Legacy] Today, the calligraphy of Chen Ru-yue remains the soul of our brand. When you see the Lin Heung sign, you are not just looking at a logo; you are looking at a piece of Intangible Cultural Heritage that has survived from the Qing Dynasty to the digital age.
